If you're like us, you're probably dismayed that you couldn't snag a campsite this summer... because they're all booked up! The good news, is that there are ways to enjoy the summer outdoors when you can't go camping.

So what can you do to get your dose of nature and a getaway... once lockdowns are lifted?

  • 1.SIMPLE PICNICS

One of the easiest ways to enjoy the fresh air and a natural setting is to do a picnic.

Check with your local parks and conservation areas whether their facilities are open to outdoor picnics.

What we mean by picnic is something simple and easy: grab a few sandwiches, drinks and snacks and take them with you in an insulated backpack. Hit a park or local trail and enjoy an impromptu, simple picnic while taking a brief rest.

  • 2.EXPLORE TRAILS WITH DAY-USE ACCESS

Many National and Provincial parks have day use access. So do Conservation areas.

If you're tired of your local urban trails, taking a short trip, or a longer drive to a larger park is a great way to get your hike on.

TIP: Pack that picnic we just mentioned! Make sure what you bring in, is what you bring out. Read up on trail etiquette before you go.

  • 3.CAMP IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD

If you've got a backyard, why not use it for some fun? This is a great idea, especially if you have little kids.

Set up your tent in your own backyard. Make S'mores and share them around the "campfire" (aka a bunch of outdoor lamps). If you like, "glamp" in comfort.

Just make sure to keep the volume down at a respectable hour as to not annoy your neighbours.

  • 4.DINE LIKE IT'S A CAMPGROUND - BREAKFAST, LUNCH & DINNER

Set up your backyard as your campsite. Use your BBQ or small portable campsite grill to make all of your favourite camping favourites.

You may be missing the smell of an open fire, but there's something to be said about enjoying a beer and relaxing.

  • 5.COOL DOWN ALONG A SHORELINE

Enjoy spending time at a beach or walk along a shoreline or pier to cool down.

Listening to the sound of waves can be extremely soothing and relaxing. Find a quiet spot and enjoy that picnic idea.

Or just take the time to watch water fowl, and take in the scene.

CHANGE YOUR SURROUNDINGS AND YOUR USUAL ROUTINE

Being outdoors is extremely beneficial to your mental health.

Getting outside is a key to feeling balanced, especially if you have a job that has you now working from home.

So whether is a weekday or a weekend, enjoy the summer outdoors with these five simple tips. Do something different and fun for the senses!

Key Tip: If you're going places and want to avoid inevitable crowds choose weekdays, and early mornings escapes.
